Real Madrid secure Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in significant transfer deal

Real Madrid have officially signed Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a deal valued at up to £120m (140m euros). The 19-year-old winger has committed to a seven-year contract with the Spanish club, which could see his transfer fee exceed the £115m (133.9m euros) paid for Jude Bellingham in June 2023.

The transfer makes Diomande the most expensive African player, surpassing the £72m Arsenal paid for Nicolas Pepe in 2019. If the full £120m is paid, Diomande would become the fourth most expensive player in football history.

Competition for the Signature

Paris St-Germain were initially considered frontrunners for Diomande’s signature, but they withdrew from negotiations after a £102.5m bid was rejected. PSG cited the “completely disproportionate and distortive” asking transfer fee and salary demands as reasons for their withdrawal. Diomande had previously indicated a preference to join the Ligue 1 side and had agreed to a contract with them until 2031.

Liverpool also showed interest in the young winger, with an initial bid of £69m rejected in June. The club was reportedly seeking a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who recently joined Trabzonspor. Other Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester City, were also keen on acquiring Diomande.

Real Madrid’s previous bid of £85.4m (€100m) for Diomande was also rejected, with Leipzig seeking a higher fee, which they ultimately secured. Diomande expressed his gratitude to Leipzig fans for their support and described the move to Madrid as a “childhood dream come true.”

Diomande’s Impact and Versatility

Diomande’s move to Real Madrid aligns with the club’s strategy of signing promising young talents. At 19, he has emerged as a significant prospect due to his pace, dribbling skills, creativity, and attacking prowess. In his first full season in Europe with Leipzig, he scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists across all competitions, attracting interest from several major clubs.

His versatility is a key asset; he is comfortable playing on either wing, capable of creating chances, beating defenders, and contributing goals. From the left, he can cut inside and threaten goal, while from the right, his pace and crossing ability can create opportunities for teammates. This flexibility makes him a strong fit for Real Madrid, who have been looking for more consistency in the right-wing position.

Diomande was named the Bundesliga’s Young Player of the Season for 2025-26, having scored 12 goals and registered eight assists in the competition. He also participated in all four of Ivory Coast’s World Cup games before their elimination in the round of 32 by Norway.

Diomande’s journey began in Ivory Coast, moving to an academy in the United States before joining Spanish side Leganes in 2025, and then Leipzig later that year. He formed a strong partnership with right-back Ridle Baku at Leipzig, and his attacking threat could be further enhanced by linking up with experienced full-backs like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Cucurella at Real Madrid.

Diomande is the sixth summer signing for Real Madrid under new head coach Jose Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espi.
