R Smaran, the Karnataka batter, is focused on achieving significant milestones in the upcoming cricket season, including breaching the 1000-run mark in the Ranji Trophy. His ambition extends to improving his game across all formats, with a particular emphasis on his T20 skills. Smaran’s rise in cricket has been notable, marked by twin centuries in his debut Ranji Trophy season in 2025 and a strong performance in the 2026 season.

The left-handed batter was a key player in Karnataka’s journey to their first Ranji Trophy final in 11 years, emerging as the highest run-scorer that season with 950 runs. His ultimate goal is to earn an India cap across all formats, making his off-season preparation crucial. Smaran works closely with his childhood coach, Syed Zabiulla, whom he considers a part of his family.

Smaran acknowledges the short off-season period, which he believes must be utilized optimally. He noted that the time between the IPL, state leagues, and the Duleep Trophy leaves only about a month and a half for focused game improvement. This period is vital for developing new technical skills or making minor mindset adjustments that can lead to more runs in the domestic season. He stresses the importance of quickly transitioning between red-ball and white-ball cricket during practice, as each format has distinct demands.

Despite the limited time, Smaran maintains a positive outlook, stating that players have adjusted to the demanding schedule. He believes that the IPL will only continue to grow, making it essential for players to adapt and maximize their off-season training. His commitment to optimal preparation is evident as he gears up for the Duleep Trophy, which is scheduled to begin at the BCCI’s CoE in Bengaluru later this month. This will be his second consecutive year representing the South Zone team.

Preparation and Mindset for the New Season

For Smaran, preparation for the Duleep Trophy is paramount, especially since the team directly enters the semifinals. He mentioned having played on the ground before, which he hopes will aid his preparation. He views the match as an extension of practice, emphasizing that more practice leads to better performance. As he embarks on a new season, the 23-year-old aims to manage expectations and enjoy the game.

Smaran believes that excessive expectations can create undue pressure. His focus is on taking each game as it comes and enjoying the process of playing for his state and team. One of his primary objectives is to remain at the top of the scoring charts in the Ranji Trophy, a feat he acknowledges is challenging but not impossible. He hopes to surpass his previous run tally and achieve the 1000-run target this year.

His recent performance includes 1534 runs in 26 innings at an average of 73.60, including three double hundreds, over the last two Ranji Trophy seasons. This consistency has established him as a prominent young talent. Smaran also played a crucial role in Karnataka’s 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy victory, ending a five-year title drought for the state by scoring 433 runs in seven innings at an average of 72.16, with two centuries and two fifties. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he was Karnataka’s leading run-scorer with 319 runs in seven innings, averaging 63.80 at a strike rate of 160.

Smaran’s off-season training involves constantly switching between red-ball and white-ball practice to adapt his muscle memory and instincts. He finds transitioning from red-ball to white-ball cricket easier due to the increased scoring options, but moving back to red-ball requires patience and leaving more deliveries. He maintains that his technique remains consistent across formats, with mindset being the primary adjustment. He also noted the importance of developing a wider range of shots, including the sweep and reverse sweep, to unsettle spinners, especially on turning tracks in India.

Reflecting on IPL and Future Aspirations

Smaran’s first full IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) provided valuable learning experiences, despite not meeting his personal expectations. A memorable moment from his IPL stint was hitting a four to secure victory against Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium, guiding SRH to the playoffs. He acknowledges that his T20 game still has room for improvement, particularly in taking on bowlers aggressively from the first ball, a skill he is working on during the off-season.

He observed that modern T20 games often see scores of 230-240 runs, especially in the IPL, necessitating continuous development of his T20 skills. Smaran expressed gratitude for being retained by SRH, viewing it as a significant confidence booster. He learned extensively from sharing the dressing room with international players like Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Travis Head, particularly regarding the mental aspects of the game and handling pressure.

Smaran also discussed his leadership aspirations, having captained Karnataka at the age-group level to a CK Nayudu Trophy win and being part of the Maharaja Trophy-winning side. He is open to captaining Karnataka if the opportunity arises. Although he missed out on the India A tour of Sri Lanka due to injury, he has fully recovered and is focused on scoring more runs this season. His ultimate aim is to represent India in all formats, believing that consistent performance will eventually lead to opportunities.

Beyond individual achievements, Smaran’s primary motivation is to lead Karnataka to a Ranji Trophy victory after their near miss in the previous final against Jammu and Kashmir at Hubballi in February. He is collaborating with senior players like Shreyas Gopal in state league matches to strategize for the upcoming season. Smaran hopes Karnataka can perform well in the knockout stages and achieve a different outcome this year.
