Glasgow: Indian boxers secure five Commonwealth Games medals, including Arundhati Choudhary after weight cut

Indian Boxers Advance to Semifinals

Indian boxers have secured at least five bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, with Sakshi, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin, Ankush, and Narendra all reaching their respective semi-finals. This guarantees India a significant medal haul in the boxing events.

Narendra advanced to the men’s 90kg boxing semi-finals after a 3-2 split decision victory over Samoa’s Michael Seko. The bout was described as one of India’s toughest of the day, with both boxers exchanging heavy blows. Narendra held his composure in the final round to secure the win.

Earlier in his quarter-final match, Narendra took a narrow lead in the first round, with three judges scoring it 10-9 in his favour. The second round saw intense action, including a knockdown and multiple warnings. Heading into the final round, Narendra led on two judges’ cards, while three judges had the score level.

In the men’s 80kg category, Ankush secured his semi-final spot by defeating Seychelles’ Jade Micock with a 5-0 unanimous decision. Ankush dominated the contest, winning all three rounds on every judge’s scorecard. The judges’ scores included 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, and 30-27 in his favour.

Ankush established control early in his quarter-final, with all five judges scoring the opening round 10-9 for him. He continued his dominance in the second round, with four judges scoring it 10-9 and one judge awarding him a 10-8 round, giving him a commanding lead heading into the final round.

Sachin also progressed to the men’s 60kg boxing semi-finals, defeating Botswana’s Treasure Moremi by a 5-0 unanimous decision. Sachin controlled the bout from the start, winning the first two rounds on all five judges’ scorecards before closing out the match. The judges’ scores were 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28.

During his quarter-final, Sachin made a strong start, landing a left hook early in the first round. He maintained his advantage, winning the first two rounds 10-9 on all five judges’ scorecards, putting him in a strong position to secure a medal.

Arundhati Choudhary’s Challenge and Victory

Arundhati Choudhary secured her place in the women’s 70kg semi-finals, guaranteeing another medal for India. Her victory came after a challenging period where she had to manage her weight. Arundhati revealed that she had to lose nearly 2kg in one day before the tournament, a process she described as physically and mentally tough.

Speaking after her quarterfinal win, Arundhati acknowledged the difficulty of the weight cut. She stated, “I gained some weight for some reasons, but I reduced 2kg yesterday to maintain my weight. It was really tough.”

Despite this challenge, Arundhati displayed composure in her quarter-final bout against New Zealand’s Morgan Henderson, winning by a 3-1 split decision. Three judges scored the contest 30-26 in her favour. One judge backed Henderson with a score of 29-27, while the fifth judge had the bout tied at 28-28. A one-point penalty against Henderson ultimately contributed to Arundhati’s victory.

Arundhati dedicated her achievement to her younger brother and family, acknowledging their support. She expressed her ambition to win a gold medal for India.

Other Indian Medalists and Athletes

Beyond these five boxers, India has other confirmed boxing medalists at the Commonwealth Games 2026. These include Lovlina Borgohain in the women’s 75kg category, who received a direct entry into the semi-finals, and Preeti Pawar in women’s 54kg. Priya Ghanghas in women’s 60kg and Jadumani Singh in men’s 55kg have also reached their respective semi-finals, assuring medals.

In other sports, Animesh Kujur qualified for the men’s 200m semi-finals in athletics. Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill have advanced to the shot put final. Additionally, Dinesh Kumar and Navneet Singh are set to begin their men’s pairs lawn bowls sectional play match against Namibia in Glasgow.

The Indian contingent continues to compete across various disciplines, with several athletes vying for medals on July 29.
