By Sanjay Menon — 22 July 2026 — 4 min read Shreyas Iyer, captain of the India T20I team, has reflected on the recent tours of Ireland and England, describing them as a “reality check” and a “rough patch” that ultimately brought the squad closer. As India prepares to face Zimbabwe in a T20I series starting on July 23, Iyer emphasised the importance of adaptability and a fearless approach for his young team. The India team experienced a 2-0 series defeat in Ireland, followed by a challenging tour of England where they lost the five-match series 4-0, with one game washed out. Despite these setbacks, Iyer believes the experiences provided valuable lessons for the team’s development. He noted that the difficult phase helped the squad understand what they need to build as a unit, focusing on presence of mind, awareness, and adaptability on the field. Lessons from the UK Tour Iyer highlighted that the results, while not favourable, fostered stronger bonds within the team. “The results didn’t go our way. That has brought the team closer together. We’ve been having a lot of discussions about how we are going to play as a unit going forward, especially against Zimbabwe right now,” he stated. He sees the upcoming series as a significant challenge, particularly for several players who will be competing in Zimbabwe for the first time. The captain, who is also visiting Zimbabwe for the first time, is keen to adapt quickly to the conditions. He aims to empower the younger members of the squad, encouraging them to play without the fear of failure. Iyer believes that when players are not constrained by such fears, they can perform at their best. His message to the squad is to focus on the present and not be swayed by external opinions or recent fluctuating results. The squad for the Zimbabwe series includes several new faces. Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma have received their first T20I call-ups, while wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh is also in contention for his international debut. Players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Harsh Dubey, and Suryansh Shedge have recently joined the team in 2026. Mayank Yadav returns to the squad after an injury layoff, having last played for India in T20I matches in 2024. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Journey One of the young talents, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has faced his own set of challenges recently. Despite experiencing “several ups and downs” over the past four months, he remains confident. Sooryavanshi made his international debut against England, becoming India’s youngest international cricketer. However, he was subsequently dropped after three modest innings in the England T20I series, a decision that drew criticism from some former cricketers. Sooryavanshi acknowledged the difficulties of dealing with setbacks at a young age but credited the support he received for helping him regain focus. He expressed confidence in his practice and his game, aiming to contribute to the team. Notably, Harare holds special significance for Sooryavanshi, as he was a key member of India’s victorious U-19 World Cup campaign in February, where he delivered a significant performance against England in the final at the same venue. He hopes to leverage his familiarity with the conditions in Harare, having gained a fair idea about the pitches during the U-19 World Cup. Sooryavanshi is eager to apply those learnings in the upcoming matches against Zimbabwe. He mentioned having played two successful matches on that ground previously and aims to carry that momentum forward. Iyer’s Personal Resilience Iyer’s own journey back to captaincy has been marked by overcoming a series of serious injuries. A back injury in 2023 kept him out for most of that year, though he returned for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The issue re-emerged during the 2024 Test series against England, sidelining him once more. In October 2025, he suffered a spleen laceration with internal bleeding during an ODI against Australia, requiring hospitalisation. Despite these physical challenges, Iyer believes the injuries have made him mentally stronger and better equipped to handle pressure. He feels these experiences have increased his confidence as an individual, enabling him to overcome barriers and face challenges on the field more effectively. The T20I series against Zimbabwe is scheduled to begin on July 23.
