By Sanjay Menon — 10 July 2026 — 3 min read India captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged his team’s shortcomings across all aspects of the game following England‘s nine-wicket victory in the fourth T20I at the County Ground in Bristol. This win secured the five-match T20I series for England, giving them an unassailable 3-0 lead. Despite Iyer’s unbeaten 80 runs from 49 balls, he stated that his individual performance held little significance given India’s substantial defeat and the loss of the series with one match remaining. Iyer commented after the match that a total of 158 runs was insufficient, especially considering how quickly England chased it down. India had managed to post 158/7 after recovering from an early collapse in their top order. However, England successfully reached the target in just 13.5 overs, largely due to an unbroken partnership between Harry Brook and Phil Salt. India’s performance and bowling strategy Reflecting on India’s bowling effort, Iyer mentioned the team’s plans but admitted that the bowlers struggled with consistent execution. He had instructed the bowlers to maintain specific lengths, targeting the top of the middle and leg stumps, as he believed it would be difficult for England to score boundaries from those deliveries. However, he noted that the team fell short in their execution, and England capitalized on loose balls when India attempted to vary their pace or try different strategies. Iyer’s innings was a notable positive for India, but the captain emphasized that individual milestones are less meaningful without a team victory. He expressed disappointment that his performance did not contribute to a win, stating his desire to perform and secure victories for his team. He also mentioned looking forward to the next game. The series loss marks India’s second consecutive bilateral T20I series defeat. The team is currently in a transitional phase, with several young players gaining experience in overseas conditions. Iyer suggested that mistakes are inevitable during this period and that these experiences would help the players adapt and improve. Team selection and future outlook The Indian team has faced selection challenges, particularly concerning Sanju Samson, who was dropped from the second and third T20Is in favor of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has not ruled out Samson’s return, especially given the team’s current 0-2 deficit in the series at one point. The team’s batting lineup struggled against England’s pace attack, with bowlers like Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue taking a significant number of wickets in the third T20I. The management is considering adjustments to the middle order to potentially reintroduce Samson, while Ishan Kishan is expected to retain his position due to his glovework and batting. Vice-captain Tilak Varma‘s spot in the team might be under scrutiny, as he has struggled to convert starts into substantial scores in England, despite a notable performance against Ireland. India will now participate in the fifth and final T20I in Southampton, aiming to avoid a 4-1 series defeat. He believes that the players are quick learners and will assess their performances to come back stronger in the upcoming match.
