By Sanjay Menon — 25 June 2026 — 4 min read Brazil secures knockout stage spot Brazil advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup after a 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C match. The game, held at Miami Stadium, saw Vinicius Junior score twice. Neymar also made his first appearance for Brazil in three years during the match. The win meant Brazil topped their group with seven points. Morocco finished second in the group after a 4-2 win against Haiti. Vinicius Junior has now scored in every game of the tournament, bringing his total to four goals, placing him alongside Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland in goal count. Brazil took the lead seven minutes into the game when Scott McKenna failed to clear the ball, allowing Rayan to set up Vinicius Junior, who scored into an open net as goalkeeper Angus Gunn attempted to intervene. Brazil nearly scored a second goal before the first hydration break, with Vinicius Junior again finding the net after taking the ball from Jack Hendry. However, the goal was overturned by the referee following a VAR check for a foul by the Brazilian player. Throughout the first half, Brazil maintained an aggressive approach to win back possession, while Scotland struggled to convert set-piece opportunities, ending the half without any shots on target. Scotland’s hopes for progression Brazil’s second goal came just before half-time. They won the ball high up the pitch, and Bruno Guimaraes crossed it to the far post, where Vinicius Junior headed in his second goal of the match. In the second half, Brazil continued to press for another goal, which came through a midfield move. Guimaraes provided his second assist, setting up Matheus Cunha for his third goal of the tournament. The return of Neymar, who was brought on by manager Carlo Ancelotti, received a significant cheer from the crowd. This marked Neymar’s first appearance for Brazil since October 2023. Scotland’s attacking efforts were minimal, and Brazil’s goalkeeper, Alisson, maintained a clean sheet, denying Scotland a late chance. World Cup Credit: bbc.com Following their 3-0 defeat by Brazil, Scotland’s chances of reaching the last 32 of the World Cup are no longer in their own hands. They now rely on progressing as one of the eight best third-placed teams. This means they might have to wait until Sunday to confirm if they will reach the knockout stages for the first time. Out of the 12 teams that finish third in their respective groups, eight will advance. If teams are level on points in the third-place standings, goal difference will be the deciding factor. Scotland needs at least four teams to either not reach three points or to have a worse goal difference than their current -3. Remaining fixtures affecting Scotland Currently, four third-placed teams are ranked below Scotland, and five have the same number of points, with four of those five still having a game to play. According to Opta, teams with three points and a -3 goal difference have a chance of making the last 32. Scotland’s chances were further impacted by South Africa’s win over South Korea and Ecuador’s victory against Germany. With eight groups still to play, Scotland requires at least four teams to perform worse than them in the third-place standings. Several scenarios could benefit Scotland: Thursday: In Group F, Sweden would need to lose to Japan by four or more goals. In Group D, if Paraguay and Australia, both on three points, play each other, Scotland needs Paraguay to lose by two or more goals, or Australia to be beaten by at least four goals. Friday: In Group I, a draw between Senegal and Iraq, or Iraq beating Senegal by no more than two goals, would be favourable. In Group H, Uruguay losing to Spain would help. In Group G, Iran losing to Egypt is another required outcome. Saturday: In Group L, Croatia losing to Ghana by at least three goals would be beneficial. In Group K, a draw between DR Congo and Uzbekistan, or Uzbekistan winning by no more than three goals, is needed. Group J mirrors Group D, with Austria and Algeria on three points; Scotland needs Algeria to lose by two or more goals, or Austria to be beaten by at least four goals. Scotland will be closely watching these upcoming matches to see if they can secure a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament.
