What Happened

NITI Aayog has released a comprehensive set of 11 reports titled “Scenarios Towards Viksit Bharat and Net Zero,” developed by ten Inter-Ministerial Working Groups. These reports outline a roadmap for India to achieve the ambitious goal of becoming a developed nation (Viksit Bharat) by 2047, with a projected GDP of USD 30 trillion, while also committing to reach Net Zero Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2070.

Why It Matters

The reports emphasize a significant shift in India’s economic structure from a consumption-led economy to an investment-driven one. This transition is crucial for addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring sustainable growth. Key strategies include the expansion of renewable energy, electrification, and the creation of green jobs. However, the transition faces hurdles such as financing gaps, dependence on critical minerals, and technological limitations.

What’s Next

NITI Aayog suggests that overcoming these challenges will require reforms in climate finance, the implementation of green industrial policies, and the development of resilient supply chains. The reports also advocate for sustainable infrastructure and behavioral changes driven by the Mission LiFE initiative. The success of this vision will depend on collaborative efforts across various sectors to ensure a balanced approach to economic growth and environmental sustainability.
