The West Asia conflict that erupted in late February has significantly impacted global energy markets, leading to a rise in gas cylinder prices in India. Recently, the price of a 14.2kg domestic LPG cylinder has surged by Rs 60, while the 19kg commercial cylinder has faced three price hikes within just one month, totaling Rs 196 in April 2026. These increases are forcing the Indian government to take action.

In response, the government is enforcing stricter LPG booking rules. The interval between bookings has been extended from 21 days to 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural regions. This change aims to manage supply more effectively amid fluctuating global prices.

But why this push for stricter rules? The answer lies in an ongoing effort to transition households toward piped natural gas (PNG). Approximately 5.45 lakh PNG connections have already been established since March 2026, indicating a significant shift in how households access cooking fuel. Households with PNG connections are now prohibited from surrendering their domestic LPG connections.

This policy shift also includes a mandatory Aadhaar-based biometric authentication for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana who have not completed their eKYC. Such measures aim to streamline the delivery process and ensure that only eligible households receive subsidized LPG services.

In addition, an OTP-based delivery authentication system is expected to become a permanent fixture for LPG deliveries, enhancing security and accountability in the distribution process.

This context matters because it indicates a broader strategy by the Indian government to reduce dependency on traditional LPG cylinders—especially as global energy prices continue to rise. Households that do not switch to PNG despite availability will see their LPG supply cease after three months.

Looking ahead, further revisions in LPG prices are anticipated from May 1, 2026. Observers are keenly watching how these changes will affect consumer behavior and overall energy consumption patterns across India.
