“Lebanon’s government is responsible for stopping direct talks with Israel,” said Nayem Qasim, a key figure in Hezbollah. This statement follows a recent Israeli attack that resulted in five deaths and left twenty-one others injured in Lebanon.

The attack occurred on April 28, 2026, highlighting the ongoing tensions between Israel and its neighbors. Among the injured were four children and nine women, which underscores the tragic human cost of this conflict. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed these casualties, bringing attention to the urgent need for peace.

This incident marks a significant violation of a 10-day ceasefire that Israel had previously agreed to uphold. The context here is crucial: Israel has faced increasing hostility from various groups, including Hezbollah, and has struggled with rising animosity toward Christian communities across Gaza, the West Bank, and southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah’s response was swift; they called on the Lebanese government to engage in internal discussions to address the implications of Israel’s aggression. This push for dialogue reflects a broader strategy aimed at uniting various factions within Lebanon to counter external threats.

On a larger scale, U.S. President Donald Trump recently mentioned a 60-day deadline for Congress to approve military action against Iran, suggesting that regional dynamics are shifting rapidly. Trump stated, “Iran wants a deal, but I am not satisfied.” This highlights not only the complexities of U.S. foreign policy but also how it intertwines with local conflicts.

The backdrop of this situation includes a long history of conflict between Israel and Lebanon, marked by cycles of violence and temporary truces. As tensions escalate once more, many wonder how long this fragile peace can hold.

As we look ahead, both domestic and international pressures will likely shape the responses from both governments involved. With Hezbollah urging internal dialogue amidst external aggression, Lebanon faces a critical juncture in its approach to security and diplomacy.

In a significant escalation, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has declared all military actions by Hezbollah illegal, urging security forces to halt assaults from Lebanese territory. This comes after Israel's airstrikes in response to Hezbollah's attacks, raising concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.

Nawaf Salam asserts that all actions taken by Hezbollah are deemed ‘illegal’ following the group’s assault on Israel from Lebanon.

The Prime Minister of Lebanon, Nawaf Salam, has declared that Hezbollah’s military and security operations are prohibited, shortly after Israel conducted airstrikes on the group’s positions in the southern suburbs of Beirut in retaliation for a rocket and drone assault linked to Iran.

Hezbollah's Illegal Actions

Nawaf stated on Monday, “We are instituting a prohibition on Hezbollah’s military operations and limiting its involvement to the political domain.”

“We express our disapproval of any military or security actions initiated from Lebanese territory that fall outside the scope of legitimate institutions.”

The prime minister stated that all military operations conducted by Hezbollah are deemed “unlawful” and urged the security forces to “stop any assaults originating from Lebanese territory.”

“We affirm our dedication to ending hostilities and resuming negotiations,” he stated.

The Iranian-backed Lebanese militia announced on Monday that its assault on a military missile defense site near Haifa was a response to the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, asserting it was “to protect Lebanon and its citizens” and “as a reaction to ongoing Israeli hostilities.”

In response, Israel conducted airstrikes on the suburbs of Beirut and southern Lebanon, resulting in over 30 fatalities and 149 injuries, as reported by the state-operated National News Agency.

Prime Minister's Stance

On Monday, the Israeli military announced that a nighttime airstrike in Beirut resulted in the death of Hussein Makled, who was identified as the leader of Hezbollah’s intelligence operations.

It alleged that Makled was tasked with gathering intelligence reports on Israeli military activities and collaborating with high-ranking Hezbollah officials to strategize assaults on Israel, asserting that operations targeting the group would persist.

Promotion

Hezbollah, functioning autonomously from the Lebanese government, has suffered significant losses due to a conflict in 2024, during which Israel eliminated a majority of the group’s military and political leadership.

Faced with increasing pressure from the United States and Israel, Lebanese officials consented to disarm Hezbollah, which characterized the proposal as a tactic by the US and Israel and declined to relinquish its arms north of the Litani River. The organization asserted that a ceasefire established in November 2024 pertained solely to disarmament south of the river.

Last month, the Lebanese authorities announced that their military would require a minimum of four months to finalize the second phase of its initiative to dismantle Hezbollah’s weaponry in the southern region of the country. This phase pertains to the territory situated between the Litani and Awali rivers, approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Beirut.

Military Operations Prohibited

In January, it was announced that the initial phase of a five-stage plan had been completed, which encompasses the region between the Litani River and the southern border with Israel.

The ongoing military conflict between Israel and Hezbollah may exacerbate the already critical situation in Lebanon, a country that has been grappling with significant economic and political challenges for several years.

Salam described the Hezbollah assault as a reckless and dubious action that endangers the security and safety of Lebanon, while also giving Israel justification to persist in its aggression.

The Israeli military has instructed inhabitants to evacuate 18 towns and villages, asserting that these areas are being utilized by Hezbollah.

According to Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, who reported from Beirut, a humanitarian crisis is developing as hundreds of thousands are fleeing from southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of the capital.

“This forms a part of Israel’s approach to penalize those who support Hezbollah and individuals residing in regions influenced by Hezbollah,” she stated.

Response to Israeli Airstrikes

Khodr stated that Israel aimed to “incite opposition to the group and hold it responsible for intensifying a previously low-level conflict.”

The US embassy in Beirut has advised American citizens against traveling to Lebanon and recommended that those currently in the country “leave Lebanon IMMEDIATELY while commercial flight options are still available.”

“The situation regarding security in Lebanon remains unstable and uncertain,” it stated in a post on social media.
