Moving Samson to number 6 could also limit India to five bowlers, a department already facing challenges with the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, and Varun Chakravarthy. Samson has strong statistics as an opener, with 926 runs from 28 innings, including three hundreds and four fifties, and a strike rate of 181.93. His strike rates at numbers 3, 4, and 5 are 121, 129, and 127 respectively. Abhishek Sharma, currently the number 1 T20I batter, has also been effective as an opener, scoring 1414 runs from 43 innings with two hundreds and 10 fifties, and a strike rate of 192.38.

All three players—Abhishek (563), Kishan (602), and Samson (477)—had successful outings in IPL 2026. Kishan also recently scored 125 against Afghanistan in the second ODI at Lucknow. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer will need to carefully consider whether to debut Sooryavanshi or maintain the current winning combination. The presence of Sooryavanshi is expected to put pressure on Samson and Abhishek to perform consistently.
