What’s New with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway?

The inauguration of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s ‘Missing Link’ took place on Maharashtra Day, May 1, 2026, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This significant infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Pune but caused major traffic disruptions during the celebrations.

Traffic congestion reached alarming levels as thousands of vehicles were on the road for the festivities. Reports indicate that commuters faced delays of over an hour due to the simultaneous inauguration and holiday traffic.

That context matters because this expressway upgrade is not just about easing travel; it represents a broader push for economic growth in Maharashtra. The ‘Missing Link’ spans 13.3 kilometers and cost around Rs 6,700 crore. It is designed to improve road safety by bypassing steep mountain passes, which have historically posed risks for drivers.

The project promises to cut travel time between these two bustling cities by 25-30 minutes and reduce the distance by approximately 6 kilometers. Key features include tunnels, viaducts, and a remarkable 182-metre-high cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley—one of the tallest in India.

This bridge can withstand winds up to 240 kmph, ensuring safety even in adverse weather conditions. However, experts caution that dense fog during monsoon and winter months may still impact visibility.

Currently, speed limits are set at 100 kmph for cars and 80 kmph for buses. Initially, only light motor vehicles and passenger buses can use this route; heavy vehicles will be restricted until at least October 31.

Fadnavis emphasized that the ‘missing’ is over as Maharashtra moves forward with stronger connectivity. He described the project as an ‘engineering marvel’, yet he also expressed regret over the traffic inconvenience caused during the event.
