Pacer Auqib Nabi has been named as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah, who has been ruled out due to an injury. The squad also includes another uncapped player, all-rounder Saransh Jain, who was part of the initial selection. The series will see India play a four-day practice match in Colombo starting on August 7, before the official Test matches commence. The first Test is scheduled from August 15-19 in Galle, followed by the second Test from August 23-27 in Colombo. The initial squad for the Sri Lanka tour, announced on July 28, 2026, listed Shubman Gill as captain and KL Rahul as vice-captain. Other players included Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, and Saransh Jain. It was noted that Sai Sudharsan and Jasprit Bumrah’s availability was subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI COE. New faces bring strong domestic form Auqib Nabi, a 29-year-old pacer from Jammu and Kashmir, joins the squad with a notable domestic record. He was a key player in his state’s first Ranji Trophy triumph, where he also earned the player of the tournament award. In the 2025-26 edition of the Ranji Trophy, Nabi secured 60 wickets in ten matches, marking the third-highest wicket tally for an Indian pacer in the tournament. Across two Ranji Trophy seasons, he has taken a total of 104 wickets, including 13 five-wicket hauls in 18 matches. Seven of these five-wicket hauls came in one season, equalling the most by any pacer in a first-class season in India. Beyond first-class cricket, Nabi has also demonstrated his batting capabilities, scoring an unbeaten 114 against Hyderabad in a Vijay Hazare Trophy game in List A cricket. He recently participated in an India A tour of Sri Lanka, where he claimed six wickets in two matches. He bowls right-arm off-break and bats left-handed. His first-class career includes 188 wickets and 2223 runs, with averages of 27.30 and 31.75 respectively. In three of the last four Ranji Trophy seasons, Jain has achieved over 300 runs and 25 wickets each season. His most recent season was particularly strong, with 518 runs at an average of 57.55 and 30 wickets at 20.43. He has two first-class centuries and 14 half-centuries to his name. Jain was also named Player of the Tournament in the Duleep Trophy, where he recorded two half-centuries and took 16 wickets in just two matches. Like Nabi, he was part of the India A squad that toured Sri Lanka, scoring an unbeaten 70 and picking up six wickets in the second four-day match in Galle, one of the venues for the upcoming Test series. Hopes for World Test Championship standings The inclusions of Auqib Nabi and Saransh Jain, along with their recent experience in Sri Lanka with the India A squad, are expected to provide momentum for India. The team aims to improve its position in the ICC World Test Championship standings. Washington Sundar was not available for selection for the first Test.
