Chelsea in talks to sign Brighton forward Danny Welbeck

Chelsea are currently in discussions to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. The Brighton forward, aged 35, has expressed interest in a move to Stamford Bridge, and there is optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal could be reached. Welbeck has one year remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium.

The potential acquisition of Welbeck signals a strategic shift for Chelsea, as the club seeks to add experienced players to its squad. Influential owner Behdad Eghbali indicated in April that the club’s model of signing young players needed an adjustment. Welbeck’s arrival would align with this new focus on experience and strong personalities, which manager Xabi Alonso has reportedly identified as necessary to address team shortcomings.

Last season, Welbeck achieved a career-high of 13 league goals in 37 games for Brighton. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches. He signed a 12-month contract extension in March, with his current deal set to run until the end of the 2026-27 season.

Strategic Shift for Chelsea

The move for Welbeck follows earlier attempts by Chelsea to sign 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, though Sunderland declined to sell the Switzerland captain. While Chelsea recently signed 23-year-old attacker Morgan Rogers for a club-record £117m, a move that fits their preferred policy of signing younger players, Rogers also brings significant Premier League experience. Chelsea are also expected to complete a £52m move for 26-year-old Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, further adding Premier League-ready experience.

The interest in Welbeck, a player in his mid-30s, marks a notable departure from Chelsea’s recent strategy of acquiring young talent. This shift is seen as a response to the need for experienced players to guide a relatively young squad. Chelsea’s four senior strikers currently have an average age of 23. Welbeck, with 400 appearances and 90 goals in the Premier League, could provide the leadership and experience that manager Xabi Alonso is seeking.

Chelsea have previously signed several players from Brighton in recent seasons, including Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez. Additionally, several Brighton staff members, including sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell, have moved to Stamford Bridge over the past four years.

Impact on Current Strikers

Welbeck’s potential arrival could raise questions about the futures of several existing Chelsea forwards. Joao Pedro is currently considered the club’s first-choice option. Other forwards on Chelsea’s books include Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson.

Marc Guiu is understood to be available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing him at approximately £25m. Nicolas Jackson, who recently returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, was expected to remain at Stamford Bridge but is reportedly open to leaving due to interest from Aston Villa. Liam Delap, who joined Chelsea a year ago in a £30m move from Ipswich, was keen to establish himself under new manager Xabi Alonso but is increasingly expected to depart. There is also uncertainty surrounding the future of Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha, despite his recent move to Chelsea from Strasbourg.

While Welbeck may be content to provide cover for Joao Pedro, his move would likely impact the opportunities for other forwards. The club finished 10th in the Premier League last season and is not involved in European competition, which means an abundance of attacking options could lead to further player movements.

Chelsea have already signed full-back Marco Palestra and are closing in on a move for centre-back Maxence Lacroix this summer.
