FIFA unveils World Cup Dream XI after global fan vote

FIFA has announced its official Dream XI for the recently concluded World Cup 2026, following a global fan vote. The selection highlights top performers from the tournament held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While Spain, France, and Argentina, all semi-finalists, dominate the team, England, who finished third, has one representative.

Jude Bellingham is the sole England player in the Dream XI. His inclusion follows another strong tournament performance for the Real Madrid midfielder. Bellingham scored seven goals, which is the highest tally ever for an England player in a single FIFA World Cup, contributing to the team’s best finish since 1966. Despite other notable performances from England players, including Bukayo Saka’s hat-trick against France and Declan Rice’s display in the third-place play-off, Bellingham was the only English player to be voted into the final XI.

Dominance from Spain, France, and Argentina

Spain, the tournament champions, have three players in the Dream XI. Rodri, who captained Spain to their second World Cup title and won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, anchors the midfield. Full-backs Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro also join him in the team. Spain completed an unbeaten tournament, defeating Argentina in the final.

France, despite finishing fourth, also contributes three players to the squad. Kylian Mbappé, the Golden Boot winner with 10 goals, occupies the right side of the attack. He became the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice and surpassed Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record with 22 career goals. Michael Olise, who recorded seven assists, the most ever by a player in a single FIFA World Cup, takes a midfield spot. Dayot Upamecano completes France’s representation in central defence.

Argentina, the beaten finalists, have two players in the Dream XI. Lionel Messi features on the left wing, having finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists. Defender Lisandro Martínez partners Upamecano in the central defence. Completing the front three is Norway striker Erling Haaland, who made his World Cup debut by helping his country reach their first-ever quarter-final appearance, scoring seven goals during the tournament.

Surprise Goalkeeper Selection

The goalkeeper selection for the Dream XI presented a surprise. Instead of Golden Glove winner Unai Simón, England’s Jordan Pickford, or France’s Mike Maignan, fans voted for Cape Verde veteran Vozinha. The 40-year-old emerged as a breakout star during Cape Verde’s run to the Round of 32, where they narrowly lost to eventual finalists Argentina.

Vozinha kept clean sheets against Spain and Saudi Arabia, making 18 saves throughout the tournament. His performances also garnered significant attention on social media. According to tournament figures, his Instagram followers reportedly increased from around 50,000 at the start of Cape Verde’s opening match against Spain to 29.5 million by the end of the World Cup.

Individual Honours and Recognitions

The Dream XI announcement follows other individual honours from the tournament. Rodri received the Golden Ball as the competition’s best player, while Messi and Mbappé were awarded the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball, respectively. Mbappé secured the Golden Boot with 10 goals, surpassing Messi’s eight goals and four assists. Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón earned the Golden Glove after conceding only one goal in eight matches. Additionally, teenage defender Pau Cubarsí collected the FIFA Young Player Award, and the Netherlands received the FIFA Fair Play Award for accumulating just three yellow cards during their campaign.
