By Sanjay Menon — 11 July 2026 — 3 min read England has ascended to the top position in the latest ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, concluding India’s 1,601-day reign. This shift occurred after England secured a dominant 4-0 series victory over India in a recent five-match T20I series. The series saw England deliver clinical performances at home against the current T20 World Champions. The final match of the series, held in Southampton, saw England clinch a 56-run victory. This win completed a clean sweep for England, with the opening game of the series in Chester-le-Street being washed out due to rain. Following the initial washout, England asserted their dominance in the subsequent four games, showcasing strong form across all departments. Dominant Batting Performances In the fifth T20I in Southampton, England’s batting lineup proved formidable. After being put in to bat, England posted a substantial total of 257/3. A key partnership between Jos Buttler and Harry Brook was central to this impressive score. The pair combined for a 233-run partnership for the second wicket, which stands as the highest stand for any wicket in men’s T20I history. This record-breaking collaboration dismantled India’s bowling attack. Jos Buttler, the England skipper, delivered a standout performance, scoring 131 runs off 64 balls. His innings included 12 fours and eight sixes, marking his career-best T20I score. During this innings, Buttler also achieved his quickest half-century in T20Is. Harry Brook complemented Buttler’s efforts, remaining unbeaten on 95 runs off just 45 balls, narrowly missing a century. The aggressive batting from Buttler and Brook left India’s bowlers struggling. India’s bowling unit faced a challenging outing in the final match. Axar Patel conceded 63 runs in four overs, while Prince Yadav gave away 60 runs. Debutant Suryansh Shedge also struggled, leaking 39 runs in three overs. England’s relentless hitting provided little opportunity for the visitors to make a comeback. India’s Struggle and Loss of Ranking Chasing 258 runs proved to be a difficult task for India. Despite efforts from Ishan Kishan, who scored 56, and Tilak Varma, who made a quick 53, India could only manage 201/8. These individual performances were not enough to threaten England’s commanding total, leading to a memorable series clean sweep for England. The series defeat marked a significant downturn for India, who had held the top spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings since February 2022. This period of dominance lasted for more than 1,600 days. India’s slip to second place follows their 4-0 series loss to England, which came after a 2-0 defeat to Ireland late last month. The team has been under a new regime led by captain Shreyas Iyer, and they have yet to secure a victory since their World Cup win in Ahmedabad in February of this year. Under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, India has now suffered six defeats, indicating a struggle for consistency during the tour. England’s comprehensive performance included handing India their biggest defeat in T20Is in Nottingham and successfully chasing down 159 runs in just 13.4 overs in Bristol. Ahead of the final T20I, England’s skipper had publicly stated that achieving the No. 1 ranking was the team’s target, a goal they successfully accomplished with their emphatic series win.
