Tirumala: How is Adapting to the Summer Rush?

Tirumala temple, a significant pilgrimage site in Andhra Pradesh, has become a focal point for thousands of devotees—especially during the summer rush. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has implemented extensive measures to provide relief from the heat for pilgrims visiting this revered location. Notably, they have invested approximately two crore rupees to improve facilities.

Before these changes, pilgrims often faced discomfort due to limited shaded areas and insufficient access to drinking water. The situation was exacerbated during peak seasons when the number of visitors surged. However, this year marks a decisive shift.

TTD has arranged shaded shelters stretching from Batagangamma Circle to Gogarbham Dam Circle and up to the Outer Ring Road. This initiative significantly enhances the comfort level for those waiting in long queues. Additionally, TTD has made provisions for mobile water drums, ensuring that pilgrims stay hydrated throughout their visit.

The direct effects of these changes are already evident. With a total of 16 medical centers available, health emergencies can be addressed quickly. Furthermore, TTD has increased laddu distribution by an additional 3.50 lakh laddus during this busy season, ensuring that devotees can partake in this traditional offering without delays.

That context matters because it highlights how TTD is prioritizing accommodation for families over solo pilgrims, which reflects a growing understanding of visitor needs. While solo travelers may face challenges in securing rooms, families are given preference—an approach that aims to enhance the overall experience for larger groups.

The provision of 1,152 barbers, including 269 women, further indicates TTD’s commitment to comprehensive pilgrim services. These services cater not just to spiritual needs but also to personal grooming—an often overlooked aspect of pilgrimage.

In addition, there are 11 mini Kalyana Kattas available across various rest houses, providing essential amenities for those who may need a quick break during their visit. Notably, there are also 9,000 lockers available for pilgrims to securely store their belongings while they engage in worship or sightseeing.
